5 Fabulous Easy Recipes Made from Oatmeal

Just like an apple, oatmeal everyday also keeps doctors away. Oatmeal is rich on a fiber called beta-glucan which helps in lowering the cholesterol level and stabilizing blood sugar. It also prevents constipation and improves the digestive system in our body.

However, the traditional way of consuming oats in the form of porridge can get boring. We bring to you five amazing recipes that will make you crave for oatmeal every day.

OATS IDLI

Ingredients:

  • Oats – 2 cups
  • Curd – 1 ½ cup
  • Mustard seeds (Roasted dry) – 1 tablespoon
  • Split black gram (Urad Dal) – 1 tablespoon
  • Split Bengal gram (Chana Dal) – 1 tablespoon
  • Vegetable oil – ½ tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies (Finely chopped) – 2 teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves (Finely chopped) – 2 teaspoon
  • Carrots (Finely grated) – 1 small bowl
  • Salt to taste
  • Eno – ½ teaspoon

Method:

  • Dry roast the oats in a pan until brown and grind the roasted oats into a powder
  • In another pan, pour oil and fry the mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal and wait until it mix turns golden
  • Then add the chillies, coriander and carrots and fry along with the turmeric powder and fry for a minute
  • Allow the mix to cool and then add it to the powdered oats
  • Add curd and make a firm batter
  • Take the idli steamer plates and grease with oil
  • Pour the batter into the cups of the steamer and steam for 15 minutes
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney and sambar

OATS DOSA

Ingredients:

  • Oats – ½ cup
  • Semolina (Rawa) – 1/4 cup
  • Rice flour – ½ cup
  • Water – 1 ½ cup
  • Onion (Finely chopped) – 1
  • Green chillies (Finely chopped) – 2 teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves (Finely chopped) – 1 tablespoon
  • Curd – ½ cup
  • Coconut (grated) – 2 tablespoon
  • Oil – 2 tablespoon
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Grind the oats in a mixer to make it a fine powder
  • Add the rawa, rice flour and curd into the oats powder
  • As you mix the batter, pour water slowly to see the consistency
  • To the batter, add chopped onions, chillies and coriander
  • Leave the batter for 20-30 minutes
  • Take a non-stick flat pan (tawa) and heat it
  • Drizzle water to see if it is hot
  • Once hot, spread the oil on the pan
  • With a round serving spoon, pour the batter in the centre of the pan and spread it in circles.
  • Let it fry for a couple of minutes and then turn over on the other side.
  • Serve with coconut chutney.

OATS UTTAPAM

Uttappam

Ingredients

  • Oats – 2 cups
  • Gram flour (Besan)- 2 tablespoons
  • Curd – 1/2 cup
  • Capsicum (Finely chopped) – 1
  • Onion (Finely chopped) – 1
  • Tomato (Finely chopped) – 1
  • Green chillies (Finely chopped) – 2
  • Coriander (Finely chopped) – 2 teaspoons
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Make a powder of the oats by grinding in the mixer.
  • Add besan, curd and salt to the powder
  • Pour water as per consistency of the batter and mix well
  • Pre-heat a non-stick pan (tawa) and spreads oil onto it
  • Take the batter in a round serving spoon and spread in the pan
  • Sprinkle the chopped capsicum, onion, tomato, chillies and coriander on top of the uttapam
  • Let the uttampam rest for 2 minutes and then turn over
  • Drizzle some oil around the pan and let it cook for a couple of minutes
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney

OATS AND NUTS MUFFINS

Ingredients

  • Oats – 1 cup
  • Butter – 150 grams
  • Sugar – 150 grams
  • Eggs – 4
  • Flour – 2 cups
  • Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Walnuts (crushed) – ¼ cup
  • Almonds (crushed) – ¼ cup
  • Raisins (roughly chopped) – ¼ cup
  • Cashew-nuts (crushed) – ¼ cup

Method

  • Take the oats and grind into a powder
  • In a bowl, mix the butter and sugar and beat well
  • Now break the eggs and add to the mixture one by one as you beat
  • Continue beating the mixture until fluffy
  • Add the flour and baking powder and continue mixing
  • Include the nuts in the mix
  • Then add the oats powder
  • Pre-heat the oven at 180 degrees
  • Grease the baking cups with butter and place the butter paper
  • Pour the mix in a butter paper
  • Sprinkle some oatmeal on top
  • Let it bake for about 20 minutes
  • Check if baked properly by pricking till the base with a toothpick
  • Serve hot or cold as per your mood

OATMEAL, CHOCO-CHIP AND RAISIN COOKIES

Ingredients

  • Oats – 3 cups
  • Flour (Maida) – ¾ cups
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Butter – ¾ cups
  • Egg – 1
  • Baking soda – ½ teaspoon
  • Vanilla essence – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – ½ teaspoon
  • Chocolate chips – ½ cup
  • Raisins – ½ cup
  • Roasted walnut (chopped) – 1 cup

Method

  • Beat butter and sugar in a bowl for few minutes until its creamy
  • Add the egg and vanilla essence to the mixture
  • In another bowl, make a mix of flour, baking soda and salt
  • Then add the flour mixture to the creamy one and beat until smooth
  • Add the oats, chocolate chips, raisins and walnut
  • In the meantime, pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees
  • Grease the baking tray with butter
  • With a round serving spoon, or even better would be an ice cream scoop, place the cookies on the baking tray with 2 inches gap between the cookies
  • Press the cookies slightly with wet fingers
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown
  • Remove from oven and leave the cookies to cool down
  • Enjoy yummy cookies with a cup of coffee
