New York Fashion Week is a dream come true for every inspiring model and same goes for Reshma Banoo Qureshi. A victim of an acid attack, Qureshi is just like any other girl who wants to look pretty, dress up fashionably and make a name for herself. Well, she is doing it all! She is walking the ramp at one of the world’s most talked about fashion events.
Qureshi was a 19-year old girl who was on her way to appear for her 10th boards in Allahabad when her life changed in a second. She was attacked with acid by her brother-in-law and his friends as a revenge on her sister for dowry.
Her face was disfigured and she lost her left eye. She had given up all hopes of leading a normal, happy life. She hated to look at herself in the mirror. She wanted to end her life!
But a ray of hope came shining into Qureshi’s world after two years when she met Ria Sharma from Make Love Not Scars, a charitable organization that works for acid attack victims. Sharma asked Qureshi not to be ashamed of her scars and flaunt them in revolt. She taught her that it’s not her but the attackers who should be ashamed.
As Qureshi’s family had lost all their money into her treatment, Sharma stepped in by launching a campaign to raise funds for Qureshi’s healing.
As the model of Sharma’s campaign #EndAcidSale that won a Glass Lion and two Grand Prix at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2016 in France, Qureshi became a global face and soon she got an invitation to dazzle the ramp at New York Fashion Week at which she jumped on to say ‘yes’.
Well, the New York Fashion Week is just round the corner as it starts on 8th September and we can’t wait to see our ‘hero’ making us proud once again!
